Former Spanish Football Chief Luis Rubiales Denies Financial “Irregularities” After Testifying in Graft Scandal Court Case
Former Spanish football federation chief Luis Rubiales found himself in hot water once again as he testified in court over a corruption probe into his time in charge. Rubiales vehemently denied any financial “irregularities” and expressed confidence that justice will prevail in proving his innocence.
The 46-year-old, who resigned amidst controversy after forcibly kissing Women’s World Cup star Jenni Hermoso last summer, faced tough questioning during his court appearance. Despite the scrutiny, Rubiales remained steadfast in his defense, stating, “There has never been any money received in an irregular way.”
Following the court proceedings, Rubiales emphasized his willingness to cooperate with authorities and clear his name. He is required to appear in court monthly and seek permission before traveling outside of Spain as part of the ongoing investigation.
The corruption probe stems from federation contracts signed during Rubiales’ tenure, including a controversial deal to host the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. The investigation has also implicated new Spanish football president Pedro Rocha, who served as Rubiales’ vice-president before assuming the top position.
In addition to the graft scandal, Rubiales faces legal trouble over the non-consensual kiss on Hermoso, which could be classified as sexual assault under Spanish law. Despite the mounting challenges, Rubiales remains defiant in his stance of innocence and is determined to clear his name.
As the saga unfolds, the Spanish football community watches closely to see how the legal proceedings will impact the sport’s leadership and reputation. The outcome of the investigation could have far-reaching implications for the future of Spanish football governance.
