Lewis Ludlam reflects on his time at Northampton Saints and looks ahead to Champions Cup quarter-final
Northampton Saints’ Lewis Ludlam is gearing up for a crucial Champions Cup quarter-final clash against Bulls this weekend, with the flanker eyeing a trophy to cap off his time with the club.
Ludlam, who is set to depart Northampton after eight years to join French side Toulon, expressed his desire to win silverware before his departure. The 28-year-old highlighted the importance of claiming a trophy as a fitting farewell to club legends like Courtney Lawes and Alex Waller, who will also be moving on at the end of the season.
The Saints are currently sitting at the top of the Premiership table and will be looking to replicate their 2000 Champions Cup triumph. Ludlam credited the team’s defensive resolve for their success this season, noting the improvements they have made in that area under head coach Sam Vesty.
Looking ahead to the quarter-final clash, Ludlam expects a physical challenge from Bulls but believes that the Saints’ forward pack will be up to the task. Despite his impending move to Toulon potentially ruling him out of future England selection, Ludlam expressed his continued ambition to represent his country.
“Playing for your country is the pinnacle,” Ludlam said. “I never want to close that door but to direct my energy into a completely different challenge was appealing for me.”
As Northampton prepares to face Bulls in a high-stakes encounter, Ludlam’s determination to end his Saints career on a high note adds an extra layer of motivation for the team as they aim for glory in the Champions Cup.
