New Archery Performance Centre Opens with Indoor Range for All-Weather Training
The new Archery GB performance centre at Lilleshall, Shropshire, has officially opened its doors to Britain’s top archery competitors. The state-of-the-art facility, costing £3.6m and funded by Sport England and UK Sport, boasts both indoor and outdoor shooting ranges, allowing athletes to practice in all weather conditions.
Named in honor of archery legends Margaret Maughan and Simon Terry, the facility includes a 70m indoor range dedicated to Maughan, Britain’s first Paralympic gold medalist in archery, and an outdoor range paying tribute to Terry, the first British archer to win two Olympic medals.
Archery GB’s performance director, Tom Duggan, expressed the importance of recognizing the contributions of Maughan and Terry to the sport. The new facility replaces the previous makeshift training areas, providing a much-needed upgrade to meet the standards required for elite training.
Paralympian Nathan Macqueen praised the new centre, calling it the best archery facility in the world. Lisa Dodd-Mayne from Sport England emphasized the importance of allowing grassroots archers, including young people, to access the facilities to inspire and attract future generations of archers.
In addition to the shooting ranges, the Performance Archery Centre features training support areas and a meeting room named the “Los Angeles room,” in reference to the 2028 Olympics host city. With a focus on the upcoming Paris Olympics, Archery GB is also keeping an eye on the horizon for future competitions in LA and Brisbane. The new facility is set to be a game-changer for British archers as they prepare for international competitions.
