Man Sentenced to at Least 18 Years in Prison for Killing Former Utah Football Player Aaron Lowe

The man who killed former Utah football player Aaron Lowe in 2021 has been sentenced to at least 18 years in prison, with the possibility of a life sentence, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Buk Mawut Buk, 25, was convicted of first-degree felony murder and first-degree attempted felony murder after a shooting at a house party in the Salt Lake City area.

Buk pleaded guilty to the charges in March, in a plea deal that removed the death penalty from consideration. The shooting also injured another woman, Fuamoli Pomale, who survived after being shot multiple times in the chest and neck. Buk was already on probation for previous robberies at the time of his arrest, adding to his criminal history dating back to at least 2017.

Lowe, a sophomore cornerback for the Utes, was just 21 years old when he was killed. Utah fans have continued to honor his memory, along with teammate Ty Jordan, who tragically passed away nine months prior to Lowe. The university retired the No. 22 jersey in honor of both players and established scholarships in their names.

Lowe had received the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship before his untimely death, and the university later created the Aaron Lowe Memorial Scholarship to accompany Jordan’s. The two friends and teammates were laid to rest next to each other in Mesquite, Texas, where they had grown up together.

The sentencing of Buk brings some closure to the tragic loss of Aaron Lowe, a promising young athlete whose life was cut short. Utah football fans continue to remember and honor his legacy, along with that of Ty Jordan, as they support the scholarships established in their names.
