Kaizer Chiefs Star Luke Fleurs Shot Dead in Johannesburg Carjacking
South African football is in mourning after the tragic death of Kaizer Chiefs star Luke Fleurs in a carjacking incident in Johannesburg. The 24-year-old defender was shot dead at a petrol station in the suburb of Florida on Wednesday night.
Kaizer Chiefs confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing their condolences to Fleurs’ family and friends. The club statement described the incident as a hijacking and stated that the South African Police Service (SAPS) are handling the matter.
Fleurs, who represented South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics, started his career at Ubuntu Cape Town before moving to SuperSport United for a five-year spell. He joined Kaizer Chiefs last year and was considered a rising star in South African football.
Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo provided details of the incident, stating that Fleurs was approached by gunmen who demanded his vehicle. After being shot in the upper body, Fleurs was taken to a medical care center where he was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.
An investigation has been opened by the police, with no arrests made at this stage. Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has appointed a team of detectives to handle the case.
