Legendary Notre Dame Coach Knute Rockne’s Grave Moved to University Campus
Legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne was honored with a solemn reburial at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the University of Notre Dame campus this week. Rockne, who led the Fighting Irish to three national championships and a remarkable 105-12-5 record, tragically died in a plane crash in 1931 at the age of 43.
The decision to move Rockne’s grave from Highland Cemetery in South Bend to the university’s campus came after concerns from the Rockne family about the lack of protection at the original burial site. Along with Knute Rockne, the graves of his wife, Bonnie, and his son Bill and grandson Timothy were also relocated.
The reinterment process was carried out quietly, with only a few family members present. A priest led prayers at Notre Dame to mark the occasion, emphasizing the reverence and respect with which the move was conducted.
Rockne’s granddaughter, Jeanne Anne, expressed relief that her grandfather would now be cared for at Cedar Grove Cemetery, where the university could ensure his eternal rest. “I’m glad he’s here,” said Rockne’s grandson, Nils. “I’m glad Notre Dame will look after the family. I feel comfortable knowing he’ll be cared for forever.”
The University of Notre Dame released a statement expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to assist with the reburial of Knute Rockne and his family members. The move serves as a fitting tribute to a coaching legend whose legacy continues to inspire generations of football fans.
