The Story of Liverpool’s Greatest Scout, Geoff Twentyman: A Sporting Witness Podcast
Liverpool’s Greatest Scout: Geoff Twentyman’s Legacy Lives On
Geoff Twentyman, the legendary scout who played a pivotal role in shaping Liverpool’s most successful teams of the seventies and eighties, is being celebrated for his incredible eye for talent and dedication to the club. Recruited by manager Bill Shankly in 1967, Twentyman’s impact on Liverpool’s history is undeniable.
In a recent interview on the Sporting Witness podcast, Twentyman’s son, Geoff Jr, shared insights into his father’s remarkable career. From discovering future Liverpool legends like Ian Rush, Phil Neal, Kevin Keegan, and Alan Hansen, to helping the club secure an impressive array of trophies, Twentyman’s contributions were truly invaluable.
Despite starting out as a defender in Shankly’s Carlisle side in the 1950s, Twentyman found his true calling as a scout. His ability to spot talent in unexpected places, such as the lower leagues, set him apart from others in the industry. One of his most notable finds was Kevin Keegan, who he signed from Fourth Division Scunthorpe for a mere £35,000. Keegan went on to win two Ballon d’Or awards during his time at Liverpool.
Additionally, Twentyman’s keen eye for talent led to the discovery of Phil Neal and Ian Rush, both of whom became key players in Liverpool’s success. Neal, signed from Northampton Town, became one of the club’s most decorated players, while Rush went on to become Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Geoff Jr fondly recalls his father’s dedication to finding the best players for Liverpool, even if it meant traveling long distances or scouting in unfamiliar territories. Twentyman’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of scouts and players alike.
In honor of his contributions, a plaque commemorating Twentyman and the rest of the ‘Boot Room boys’ was recently unveiled outside Anfield. His impact on Liverpool’s history will forever be remembered, as his legacy lives on in the hearts of fans and players alike.
