Gateshead Football Club Denied Promotion Opportunity due to Stadium Lease Dispute
Gateshead Football Club has been left devastated after being denied the opportunity for promotion to League Two via the play-offs due to issues surrounding their tenancy at the International Stadium. Despite finishing sixth in the National League, the club will miss out on the chance to move up the football pyramid.
Council leader Martin Gannon revealed that Gateshead had been offered a 10-year lease to remain at the stadium and stability as per English Football League guidelines. However, the EFL deemed that the club did not meet the criteria of having a “10-year security of tenure” due to uncertainties around a new stadium operator.
The council clarified that the stadium would remain under their control, but any terms between the club and the operator would need to be renegotiated. This decision has left Gateshead considering legal action as they feel they have been unfairly denied the opportunity to progress to the EFL.
The National League initially announced that Solihull would receive a bye to the semi-finals, but later adjusted the draw based on final league positions. Altrincham will now get a bye to the semi-finals, while Solihull will face FC Halifax Town for the chance to progress.
In a statement, the National League expressed disappointment that Gateshead would not be able to participate in the play-offs despite their efforts to support the club’s application for security of tenure. The EFL also rejected an appeal by the club, stating that appropriate solutions had not been put in place over the past two years.
Gateshead will now have to regroup and focus on the future, with hopes of addressing the issues surrounding their tenancy so that they can be eligible for promotion in the upcoming seasons.
