Dave Ryding Calls for Changes in Alpine Skiing to Adapt to Climate Change

British alpine skier Dave Ryding is calling for a change in the sport of skiing to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. With unseasonably warm temperatures affecting the World Cup ski season this year, Ryding believes that races should be shifted to higher altitudes to ensure better snow conditions.

Ryding, who secured his seventh World Cup podium last season, emphasized the need for the International Ski Federation (FIS) to come up with a “Plan B” to address the impact of climate change on the sport. He suggested using resorts at altitudes above 3,000m and did not rule out the possibility of competing indoors in the future.

The recent cancellations of races due to rain and warm temperatures have raised concerns about the future of alpine skiing. Ryding expressed his hope that the sport would not have to resort to racing on dry slopes, but acknowledged the need for innovative solutions to ensure the sustainability of skiing.

Despite the challenges, Ryding remains optimistic about the future of British skiing, especially in the slalom discipline. He highlighted the success of the British alpine team, including his teammates Billy Major and Laurie Taylor, who have also achieved their best results this season.

As Ryding looks ahead to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, he is determined to continue proving his critics wrong and showcasing his capabilities on the slopes. With less than two years to go until the Games, Ryding is focused on maintaining his peak performance and aiming for another successful Olympic campaign.
