CHSAA Adds Girls Flag Football as 33rd Sanctioned Sport, Approves Shot Clock for Basketball
The girls of Aspen High School showcased their skills and competitive spirit in a thrilling juniors versus seniors “Power Puff” football game as part of the homecoming week festivities. The annual powderpuff game brought the entire school community together to cheer on their classmates on the AHS turf.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there for female athletes in Colorado. The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) recently approved the addition of girls flag football as the 18th sanctioned high school sport for girls in the state. This decision marks a significant milestone for female athletes, providing them with more opportunities to showcase their talents on the field.
In addition to the addition of girls flag football, CHSAA also announced the implementation of a shot clock for boys and girls basketball at the varsity level starting in the 2026-27 season. This change is expected to elevate the level of play and bring Colorado basketball in line with other states.
Furthermore, CHSAA made several other important decisions during the meeting, including moving the high school ice hockey season one week earlier and separating the skiing state championships into Alpine and Nordic competitions. These changes aim to improve the overall experience for student-athletes and fans alike.
Overall, the recent decisions made by CHSAA are a testament to the organization’s commitment to supporting and enhancing high school sports in Colorado. With the addition of girls flag football and other changes on the horizon, the future looks bright for female athletes and the entire high school sports community in the state.
