Great Sankey High School Year 8 Football Team Makes History as National Champions
The Year 8 football team at Great Sankey High School has proven that winning is the only option for them, as they were crowned Sports Team of the Year at the Warrington Guardian Inspiration Awards 2024. This talented group of 12 and 13-year-olds made history by winning the English Schools National Cup last season, becoming the first team from Warrington to claim a national title in football.
Their remarkable journey culminated in an exhilarating final at West Bromwich Albion’s ground, The Hawthorns, where they secured a 2-1 victory over Shenfield High School from Essex. The team’s dedication, skill, and passion for the game were evident throughout the season, as they beat teams from across the country to lift the prestigious trophy.
Coach Andy McCann expressed his pride in the team, highlighting their hard work, resilience, and team spirit. He emphasized the importance of inspiring others in Warrington to play football and called for more support to fund grassroots pitches in the area.
