Year 8 Football Team Wins Sports Team of the Year at Warrington Guardian Inspiration Awards 2024
The Year 8 football team at Great Sankey High School has made history by claiming the Sports Team of the Year title at the Warrington Guardian Inspiration Awards 2024. This talented group of 12 and 13-year-olds, who were in Year 7 last year, secured the English Schools National Cup after defeating teams from all over the country.
Their remarkable achievement is even more impressive considering no team from Warrington or Cheshire had ever qualified for the cup before, and it had never been won by a team from the north west. The boys’ dedication, skill, and passion for the game propelled them to victory, making them the first team from Warrington to claim a national title in football.
In a thrilling final held at West Bromwich Albion’s ground, The Hawthorns, the team emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Shenfield High School from Essex. Their outstanding performance and sportsmanship were recognized in their nomination, which praised their high standards of attitude and ability.
Coach Andy McCann expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, highlighting their resilience and team spirit. He emphasized the importance of supporting grassroots football in Warrington and ensuring that young players have access to suitable playing facilities.
The success of the Year 8 football team at Great Sankey High School serves as an inspiration to the entire community, showcasing the power of teamwork, dedication, and perseverance. As they continue to celebrate their historic win, the team’s coaches, players, and supporters are united in their commitment to promoting the sport and encouraging others to follow in their footsteps.
