Aileen Campbell Vows to Stamp Out Misogyny in Scottish Football: Women in Football Event at Hampden Park

Former SNP politician Aileen Campbell is on a mission to eradicate misogyny in Scottish football, as she takes on the role of Scottish Women’s Football CEO. Speaking at Women in Football’s first public event in Scotland at Hampden Park, Campbell highlighted the damaging impact of sexist comments within the game.

The controversy arose in March when former Rangers’ midfielder Joey Barton made derogatory comments about 17-year-old Partick Thistle goalkeeper Ava Easdon during the Scottish Women’s Premier League Cup final. Campbell condemned Barton’s remarks, emphasizing that such behavior undermines the progress made in women’s football and discourages girls from participating in the sport.

Campbell, alongside SWPL boss Fiona McIntyre, is dedicated to growing the women’s football pyramid and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all participants. She stressed the importance of calling out misogyny and providing support for those who experience discrimination in the industry.

Women in Football’s recent survey revealed that 82% of women in the football industry have faced discrimination at work, highlighting the urgent need for change. Campbell emphasized the collective strength of women in football to stand up against outdated attitudes and create a more welcoming environment for future generations.

With the goal of qualifying for Women’s Euro 2025, Campbell believes that success on the international stage will have a positive ripple effect on grassroots clubs and inspire women in all roles within the game. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment, Campbell aims to create a brighter future for women in Scottish football.
