Disaster Strikes the World of Cycling: Tragic Fall in Return to the Basque Country Race

Disaster struck the world of cycling on Thursday during the fourth stage of the Return to the Basque Country, as a horrific fall claimed the lives of 12 riders, including top favorites like Primoz Roglic, Remco Evenepoel, and Jonas Vingegaard. The incident occurred on a treacherous descent towards Olaeta, leaving the cycling community in shock and disbelief.

Jonas Vingegaard, the current two-time champion of the Tour de France, was rushed to the hospital with an oxygen mask and neck brace, but thankfully, he was conscious and undergoing further checks. The scene of the accident was described as a war scenario, with riders scattered on the ground and medical personnel rushing to their aid.

The race had to be neutralized and eventually suspended, with only the six riders who had escaped the fall continuing to contest the stage. South African Louis Meintjes emerged as the winner, but the victory was overshadowed by the tragic events that unfolded on the road.

The Itzulia, also known as the Vuelta of the Basque Country, was left without its key protagonists, as the general classification was thrown into disarray. Danish rider Mattias Skjelmose took over the yellow jersey after the elimination of Roglic and Evenepoel, with Juan Ayuso close behind.

As the cycling community comes to terms with the aftermath of the accident, the race continues with the fifth stage set to take place on Friday. The riders will push forward, but the memory of the fallen cyclists will linger in the peloton, serving as a stark reminder of the dangers that come with the sport.
