Cycling Horror Crash at Tour of the Basque Country: Concern for Vingegaard and Other Top Stars
In a shocking turn of events, the Tour of the Basque Country was marred by a horrific crash that left top cycling stars, including Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard, injured and in need of medical attention. The fourth stage of the race turned into a nightmare as Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel, and Primoz Roglic were among the riders involved in the dramatic fall.
Vingegaard, who was seen lying motionless on the ground before being taken to the hospital, was diagnosed with a broken collarbone and several broken ribs. Evenepoel also suffered a broken collarbone and a fracture of his shoulder blade, requiring surgery in Belgium. Roglic, wearing the yellow jersey, escaped with no broken bones but was visibly shaken by the incident.
The crash, which occurred 35 kilometers from the finish in Legutio, also affected other riders, including Australian Jay Vine, who was diagnosed with a cervical vertebra fracture and two fractures of the thoracic spine. The race was neutralized after the crash, allowing the remaining peloton to continue at a slower pace towards the finish.
The Tour of the Basque Country serves as a preparation for the upcoming big tours in the summer, with many top riders using the race to fine-tune their form. The incident comes just a week after Belgian star Wout van Aert suffered serious injuries in a separate crash.
The cycling world was once again rocked by the news of the crash, following a recent training accident involving German rider Lennard Kämna. The 27-year-old is in stable condition after sustaining numerous injuries in the incident.
As the cycling community comes to terms with the aftermath of the crash, the focus now shifts to the recovery of the injured riders and the impact it will have on their upcoming races.
