OCBC Cycle event returns with 2,000 cyclists participating in City Ride
The OCBC Cycle event made a triumphant return to in-person mass participation cycling on Sunday morning, with 2,000 cyclists taking part in the 19-kilometre City Ride. This marked the first mass cycling event since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, and participants were thrilled to be back on their bikes, enjoying the scenic views along the Benjamin Sheares Bridge before finishing inside the iconic National Stadium.
The City Ride, which sold out in just six days, was flagged off by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong, along with other distinguished guests. Minister Tong expressed his gratitude to the sporting community for their resilience and adaptability in navigating the challenges posed by the pandemic. He emphasized the importance of regaining the initiative in mass activities while ensuring the safety of all participants.
In addition to the City Ride, the OCBC Cycle also saw the return of the Speedway Championships elite cycling competition at the Singapore Sports Hub. 24 teams competed in three categories, with Allied World Racing, the Singapore Cycling Federation, and NDS emerging as the champions in their respective categories.
The event will continue with virtual rides until 6 June, offering a variety of categories to cater to different cycling enthusiasts. A new indoor rhythmic cycling category, Spin Ride by CRU, has also been introduced in partnership with CRU studios, providing participants with the opportunity to attend spin classes and enhance their cycling experience.
Overall, the return of the OCBC Cycle event signifies a positive step towards rebuilding a thriving sporting lifestyle in Singapore. Participants and organizers alike are excited to be back on the roads and tracks, enjoying the camaraderie and competition that cycling brings.
