Australian rider Jay Vine and double Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard were both hospitalized after a horrific crash during the Itzulia Basque Country race in Spain. The crash, involving 12 riders near the front of the peloton, occurred at high speed, leaving Vine with serious injuries including a fractured cervical vertebra and two fractures in his thoracic spine. Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone and several ribs but was conscious after the alarming incident.
The crash also affected other top riders, including world champion Remco Evenepoel, who sustained a fracture to his right collarbone and shoulder blade, requiring surgery. Giro d’Italia champion Primoz Roglic, who was the overnight leader, also had to abandon the race following the crash.
The race was neutralized after the incident, with only six riders allowed to sprint for the finish. South African Louis Meintjes emerged as the stage winner in what he described as a bittersweet victory.
