Australian rider Jay Vine and Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard hospitalised after mass crash at Itzulia Basque Country race

Australian rider Jay Vine and double Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard were both hospitalized after a horrific crash during the Itzulia Basque Country race in Spain. The crash, involving 12 riders near the front of the peloton, occurred at high speed, leaving Vine with serious injuries including a fractured cervical vertebra and two fractures in his thoracic spine. Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone and several ribs but was conscious after the alarming incident.

The crash also affected other top riders, including world champion Remco Evenepoel, who sustained a fracture to his right collarbone and shoulder blade, requiring surgery. Giro d’Italia champion Primoz Roglic, who was the overnight leader, also had to abandon the race following the crash.

The race was neutralized after the incident, with only six riders allowed to sprint for the finish. South African Louis Meintjes emerged as the stage winner in what he described as a bittersweet victory.

The cycling community rallied around the injured riders, with thoughts and well wishes pouring in for their speedy recovery. The crash served as a stark reminder of the dangers that cyclists face in high-speed races, highlighting the importance of safety measures and precautions.

Despite the setbacks, Vine, Vingegaard, and the other injured riders showed resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The cycling world will be eagerly awaiting updates on their recovery and hoping to see them back on their bikes soon.
