Sir Jim Ratcliffe Calls for Action to Protect Professional Cyclists Ahead of Grand Tour Season
Ineos Grenadiers CEO, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has called for urgent action to be taken to improve the safety of professional cyclists following a series of recent accidents in the sport. In an open letter released on Friday, Ratcliffe highlighted the need for significant changes to be made to protect riders from serious injuries.
The letter comes in the wake of a horrific crash involving top cyclists Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel, and Primoz Roglic, which left Vingegaard with multiple injuries, including a broken collarbone, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung. Jay Vine, who was also involved in the crash, sustained three spinal fractures but thankfully avoided life-changing injuries.
Ratcliffe drew parallels with Formula 1, where safety regulations were drastically improved following the tragic death of Ayrton Senna 30 years ago. He commended the UCI for introducing the formation of ‘SafeR’, a specialist entity dedicated to overseeing cycling safety, but stressed that more action is needed to prevent further accidents.
The Ineos Grenadiers CEO emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of riders and spectators without compromising the thrill of racing. He urged the cycling community to follow the example set by Formula 1 in enhancing safety measures over the past three decades.
Ratcliffe’s call for action has resonated with many in the cycling world, who agree that steps must be taken to minimize the risks faced by elite cyclists. With the Grand Tour season fast approaching, the focus on safety has never been more crucial.
As the sport looks to the future, Ratcliffe’s plea for real action to ensure the safety of professional cyclists serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing the well-being of athletes in all sporting endeavors.
