Professional Cyclist Anna Shackley Retires Due to Heart Problems

Anna Shackley, a rising star in the world of professional cycling, has been forced to retire from the sport due to heart problems. SD Worx-Protime confirmed the news, stating that Shackley has been diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia and other heart irregularities, which are not compatible with a top-level sports career.

The 22-year-old cyclist from Milngavie, Scotland, began her cycling journey at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks to become a professional rider with SD Worx in 2021. She represented British Cycling at the Tokyo Olympic Games and had numerous impressive performances in races around the world.

Shackley’s career came to an abrupt end after her medical team discovered the heart irregularities during a routine screening. Despite the devastating news, Shackley remains positive and grateful for the experiences and friendships she gained through cycling.

In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Shackley expressed her gratitude for the support she has received and her determination to adapt to her new normal. She reflected on the plans and ambitions she had for the future, acknowledging the challenges of letting go of her lifelong passion.

SD Worx-Protime sports manager Danny Stam expressed his sadness at seeing Shackley’s career cut short but emphasized the importance of prioritizing her health and well-being. The team is committed to supporting Shackley as she transitions to life after cycling and wishes her the best in her future endeavors.
