Zaheer Khan raises concerns over ‘Impact Player’ rule in IPL, backs Mohammed Siraj for T20 World Cup squad
Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan has raised concerns about the ‘Impact Player’ rule in the IPL, echoing India captain Rohit Sharma’s sentiments. The rule, introduced in the 2023 season, allows teams to substitute a player during the innings, potentially leading to the development of “half-baked all-rounders.”
Zaheer highlighted the impact of the rule on players like Shivam Dube, who possess skills in both batting and bowling but are not able to showcase their all-round abilities due to limited opportunities. He emphasized the need to address this issue and find a balance in team compositions.
The former World Cup winner also advocated for the inclusion of Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh in the T20 World Cup squad, citing their performances in the IPL. Despite Siraj’s recent struggles, Zaheer believes he has the potential to bounce back and contribute to the national team.
When asked about the wicketkeeping duties in the T20 World Cup, Zaheer expressed satisfaction with Rishabh Pant’s progress and leadership skills. He also defended Mumbai Indians’ new skipper Hardik Pandya, stating that the best way to silence critics is through on-field performances.
As the cricketing landscape continues to evolve, Zaheer emphasized the importance of letting one’s game speak for itself in franchise cricket. With the T20 World Cup approaching, the selection of players and team dynamics will be crucial in India’s quest for success on the global stage.
