Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Virat Kohli’s Strike Rate Remarks, Wasim Akram Supports RCB Icon
Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has come down hard on Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli for his recent comments regarding his strike-rate in T20 cricket. Gavaskar criticized Kohli for questioning cricket experts and commentators who have raised concerns about his strike-rate ahead of the T20 World Cup squad announcement.
Gavaskar, who is an expert for Star Sports, expressed his displeasure towards Kohli’s remarks and also criticized the broadcaster for repeatedly airing the clip of Kohli’s comments. He highlighted that commentators only questioned Kohli’s strike-rate of 118 when he got out in the 14th or 15th over, and that expecting applause for such performances is unreasonable.
In a surprising turn of events, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram came out in support of Kohli, stating that the criticism directed towards him is unwarranted. Akram emphasized that Kohli has been performing well and that one player cannot win matches single-handedly. He also pointed out that RCB’s inconsistent performances are not solely Kohli’s fault, but a collective team effort.
Kohli, on his part, defended his approach by stating that his focus is on winning games for the team rather than individual statistics. He emphasized that those who have played the game at the highest level understand the nuances better than those who haven’t.
Despite the criticism, Kohli’s performance in the ongoing IPL has been impressive, as he reclaimed the Orange Cap after surpassing Ruturaj Gaikwad’s tally of runs. Kohli has scored 542 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 148.09, showcasing his ability to deliver under pressure.
