Highlights from the 25th Edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards
The 25th edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards took place on Monday evening at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid, Spain. The prestigious ceremony, which aims to honor outstanding individual and sporting achievements from the previous year, saw sports stars from around the globe in attendance.
Among the nominees for the top awards were tennis great Novak Djokovic, tennis legend Rafael Nadal, football sensation Aitana Bonmatí, soccer icon Lionel Messi, and gymnastics star Simone Biles. Cricket, despite not being as globally popular as other sports, has also been recognized at the awards in the past.
In a special moment for Indian cricket fans, a montage of ‘epic moments’ from the past year showcased Virat Kohli’s historic 50th ODI century. Kohli achieved this milestone during his innings of 117 in the World Cup semifinal against New Zealand, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 centuries.
Additionally, Australian cricketer Travis Head’s remarkable running catch to dismiss Indian captain Rohit Sharma in the World Cup final was also featured in the video montage.
The main awards of the night, for sportsman and sportswoman of the year, were claimed by Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic and Spanish footballer Aitana Bonmatí, respectively.
