ICC’s T20 World Cup Set to Elevate Cricket’s Visibility in the United States Ahead of 2028 Olympics
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is gearing up for the upcoming T20 World Cup, set to kick off next month, with high hopes of boosting cricket’s visibility and appeal in the United States. The tournament, scheduled to be co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States, will be held across venues in New York, Florida, and Dallas.
In a recent media roundtable, Chris Tetley, the ICC’s head of events, expressed optimism about the impact of the World Cup on cricket’s presence in the American sports landscape. “The fact that a World Cup has come to the US — the largest sports market in the world — that in itself has generated a lot of interest,” Tetley stated. He emphasized the importance of providing world-class cricket to the existing fanbase in the US as a crucial step towards the sport’s promotion leading up to its inclusion in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
With T20 Cricket set to debut at the 2028 Olympics, the ICC sees this World Cup as a significant milestone in introducing the sport to a wider audience in the US. The tournament will feature matches at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County, close to New York, where a temporary 34,000-seat stadium with a drop-in cricket pitch has been constructed.
Stadium manager Damian Hough expressed confidence in the pitch’s quality, ensuring a thrilling experience for players and fans alike. Despite the challenges posed by the diverse climatic zones in the US, the ICC is committed to leaving a lasting legacy for cricket in the country through the provision of world-class facilities.
As cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the India-Pakistan showdown on June 9 at Eisenhower Park, the T20 World Cup promises to be a game-changer for the sport’s growth and popularity in the United States.
