Rinku Singh’s Exclusion from T20 World Cup Squad Surprises Former Players, Gavaskar Cites IPL Form as Reason
The exclusion of Rinku Singh from the primary Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Americas has sparked a debate among former cricketers and experts. While Irfan Pathan and Aaron Finch expressed surprise at Rinku’s omission, Sunil Gavaskar believes that the left-handed batter’s subpar performance in the current IPL season led to his exclusion.
The BCCI announced the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, with Rinku being placed in the reserves alongside Shubman Gill, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan. Pathan, one of the most vocal former players, expressed his disappointment at ignoring Rinku’s recent performances for Team India.
Former Australia captain Finch also questioned the selection of four spinners over Rinku, stating his surprise at the decision. West Indian great Ian Bishop echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Rinku’s impressive record in T20Is.
Gavaskar, on the other hand, attributed Rinku’s exclusion to his form in the ongoing IPL season. He suggested that players like T Natarajan could have been considered for the squad instead. Despite the debate surrounding Rinku’s omission, Gavaskar expressed confidence in the Rohit Sharma-led team’s ability to perform well in the tournament.
With a strong squad comprising experienced players and big hitters, Gavaskar believes India has a good chance of lifting the T20 World Cup. He also pointed out the team’s variety in bowling options, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya capable of filling the role of a fourth seamer.
Gavaskar emphasized the importance of a change in attitude and approach in the Indian team, which could be the key to success in the tournament. With a depth of talent and a competitive squad, India looks set to make a strong impact in the T20 World Cup.
