Ireland to Make History with First Test Match in Belfast Against Zimbabwe
In a historic moment for Irish cricket, Stormont will host its first-ever Test match as Ireland takes on Zimbabwe in July. This will mark the 123rd cricket ground to hold a men’s Test match, showcasing the growth and development of the sport in Ireland.
While fans were eagerly anticipating the men’s Twenty20 and one-day international series with Australia in August, Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom announced the postponement of the series due to a lack of permanent facilities and the high cost of temporary infrastructure. Despite this setback, Ireland’s senior women’s team will host ODI and T20 series with Sri Lanka and England in August and September.
Looking ahead to 2025, Ireland’s men’s team will aim to qualify for the T20 World Cup, with their opening qualifier against the UAE scheduled for April 25. The team has already secured a spot in the T20 World Cup in the USA, with their first match against India set to take place in New York on June 5. Additionally, Ireland will face South Africa in a multi-ball series in Abu Dhabi in October and November.
Deutrom expressed excitement about the upcoming Test match against Zimbabwe, calling it a “little piece of history” for Irish cricket. He emphasized the need for long-term solutions to improve Ireland’s facilities and infrastructure, including advocating to the Irish government for support.
As Ireland continues to make strides in the world of cricket, fans can look forward to exciting matches and opportunities for the team to showcase their talent on the international stage.
