Ireland to Make Test Match History in Belfast Against Zimbabwe
In a historic moment for Irish cricket, Stormont will host its first-ever Test match as Ireland takes on Zimbabwe in July. This will mark the 123rd cricket ground to hold a men’s Test match, showcasing the growth and development of the sport in Ireland.
While fans were eagerly anticipating a men’s Twenty20 and one-day international series with Australia in August, Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom announced the postponement of the series due to a lack of permanent facilities and the high cost of temporary infrastructure. Despite this setback, the senior women’s team will host ODI and T20 series with Sri Lanka and England in August and September, providing exciting opportunities for the women’s team to showcase their talent.
Looking ahead, Ireland has a busy schedule with qualifiers for the T20 World Cup and matches against top teams like India and South Africa. Deutrom emphasized the importance of finding a long-term solution to improve Ireland’s facilities, calling on the Irish government for support in addressing infrastructure constraints.
Deutrom expressed excitement for the upcoming Test match against Zimbabwe, stating that it will be a “little piece of history” for Irish cricket. He encouraged fans to come out and support the team as they aim to build on their success from the inaugural Test win over Afghanistan in March.
As Ireland continues to make strides in the world of cricket, the upcoming matches and series promise to be thrilling for both players and fans alike. Stay tuned for more updates on Ireland’s cricket journey as they strive for success on the international stage.
