Rishi Sunak’s £35 Million Investment in Grassroots Cricket Facilities for Schools
Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, has made a significant move to promote cricket in the country by unveiling a £35 million investment in grassroots cricket facilities. Sunak, known for his love for the sport, aims to get one million more young people active by 2030 through this ambitious project.
As part of this initiative, the UK government is set to invest around 2,500 pieces of new equipment in every school that is part of the programme. The goal is to have 930,000 pupils playing cricket over the next five years, providing access to the sport to a wider audience.
Sunak, who has a personal connection to cricket, expressed his passion for the game and the impact it can have on young people. He emphasized the importance of making cricket accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or location.
The investment will also see the construction of 16 state-of-the-art all-weather cricket domes in host cities across England, providing year-round facilities for budding players. Additionally, three charities will receive funding to support access to cricket in schools and local communities, as well as for children with special education needs and disabilities.
This announcement comes at a crucial time for cricket in England, with the start of the men’s County Championship season and the ongoing white-ball series between England women and New Zealand. The investment is expected to boost England’s chances of hosting major cricket events in the future, including the Women’s and Men’s Cricket World Cups between 2026 and 2030.
The programme aligns with the UK government’s Sports Strategy, which aims to improve the country’s health and fitness through increased funding for grassroots sports facilities. With Sunak’s dedication to promoting cricket, the future looks bright for the sport in Great Britain.
