Muttiah Muralitharan expresses concern over diminishing art of spin bowling among young Indian spinners: IPL 2024 updates
Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan, currently serving as a strategic coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, has raised concerns over the declining art of spin bowling among young Indian spinners. Muralitharan believes that the lack of spin and drift in the air is making it easier for batsmen to attack spinners more aggressively.
Speaking ahead of SRH’s clash against CSK, Muralitharan emphasized the importance of spinners being able to generate spin and deviation to challenge batsmen effectively. He pointed out that the current trend of spinners bowling quicker and straighter is not proving to be effective in the modern game.
With CSK and SRH both looking to bounce back from recent defeats, Muralitharan anticipates a high-scoring contest in the upcoming match. He highlighted the impact of the dew factor on the game and suggested that if the pitch at Chepauk is dry, there will be more turn on offer.
Despite the challenges faced by spinners in the current IPL season, Muralitharan expressed satisfaction with the brand of cricket his team is playing. He emphasized the importance of adapting to new rules like the Impact Player rule and suggested that bowlers will soon come up with strategies to counter the dominance of batsmen in high-scoring games.
Muralitharan also spoke about young pacer Umran Malik, praising his raw pace but acknowledging the need for him to develop strategies to counter batsmen’s attacks. He expressed confidence in Malik’s abilities and hinted at giving him opportunities once he is ready.
As the IPL 2024 season continues to witness high-scoring matches and new rules impacting the game, Muralitharan remains optimistic about the future of spin bowling and the ability of bowlers to adapt and succeed in challenging conditions.
