Gautam Gambhir defends Mitchell Starc’s IPL struggles, emphasizes team success over individual brilliance
Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has come out in defense of Mitchell Starc, the Australian pacer who has been under fire for his lackluster performance in the ongoing IPL season. Despite Starc’s struggles, Gambhir emphasized that individual statistics do not define a player’s abilities and highlighted the importance of team success over individual brilliance.
Starc, who was bought by KKR for a hefty sum of Rs 24.75 crore, has only managed to pick up two wickets in four matches at an average of 77 and an economy rate of 11 runs per over. However, Gambhir refrained from criticizing Starc, stating that T20 cricket is unpredictable and individual performances can vary.
“In a team sport, it’s the wins that matter. We have got three wins out of four. Why should I not be happy with anyone’s performance? See, people have bad and good days, ultimately, it’s the team that needs to win,” Gambhir said.
Despite the criticism surrounding Starc’s performance, Gambhir remains confident in the pacer’s abilities and believes that he will make a significant impact in the competition going forward.
Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL titles during his playing days, has returned to the franchise as a mentor after a stint with Lucknow Super Giants. Despite facing criticism about their head coach Chandrakant Pandit’s coaching style, Gambhir remains optimistic about the team’s prospects in the tournament.
As KKR gears up to face Lucknow Super Giants in their upcoming match, Gambhir is focused on starting afresh and believes that every day presents a new opportunity for the team to succeed. With Gambhir’s guidance and support, KKR will be looking to turn their fortunes around and make a strong statement in the IPL.
