Worcestershire County Cricket Club Mourns the Sudden Passing of Spin Bowler Josh Baker at 20
The cricketing world is in mourning today as Worcestershire County Cricket Club announced the sudden and tragic passing of their young spin bowler, Josh Baker, at the tender age of 20. Baker, who made his professional debut for Worcestershire in 2021 after progressing through the team’s academy, was a rising star in the cricketing world.
Tributes have poured in from all corners of the cricketing community, with former teammates, opponents, and cricketing organizations expressing their shock and sadness at the news. Ex-Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell described Baker as an “infectious character” who brought life to the dressing room, while Barnt Green Cricket Club remembered him as a “caring friend” and a “great bloke.”
England Cricket and the ECB also paid their respects to Baker, with the ECB extending their best wishes to his family and friends during this difficult time. The Professional Cricketers’ Association and the Professional Cricketers’ Trust are working to support Baker’s family, teammates, and all affected members of the cricketing community.
Baker’s talent and potential were evident to all who knew him, with England captain Ben Stokes even reaching out to him after a county game in 2022. Despite hitting Baker for five sixes during the match, Stokes asked for the spinner’s phone number to send him a message of encouragement.
The cricketing world has lost a bright young talent in Josh Baker, and his passing has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace, Josh.
