NEW DELHI: IPL 2024 TV Viewership Breaks All Records, Surpasses Pre-Covid Levels
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has taken the nation by storm, breaking all previous viewership records at the halfway mark of the tournament. With nearly 45.9 crore viewers tuning in for the first 34 matches, Disney Star has witnessed a surge in popularity, surpassing the pre-Covid levels of 2019.
The latest BARC data revealed that Disney Star achieved a cumulative reach of 47.5 crore viewers, along with an impressive 24500 crore minutes of total watch time. This growth of 18% in consumption compared to the previous edition highlights the immense interest in the marquee tournament.
Sanjog Gupta, head of sports at Disney Star, credited the success to the strategic branding of different phases of the IPL. The ‘IPL Rivalry Week’ featuring the clash between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings garnered unprecedented viewership, solidifying its status as one of the most popular sporting rivalries globally.
The upcoming ‘Revenge Week’ and ‘Race to Playoffs’ promise to keep fans engaged with differentiated marketing activations and fresh programming initiatives. Gupta expressed confidence that these efforts would sustain the growth in popularity of the IPL.
One of the standout moments of the tournament was the thrilling encounter between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings during the rivalry week. The match, won by CSK with a magnificent blitz from MS Dhoni, attracted a staggering 6.3 crore concurrent viewers on TV, setting a new record for concurrency in league games.
