Worcestershire left-arm spinner Josh Baker tragically passes away at the age of 20
Worcestershire left-arm spinner Josh Baker has tragically passed away at the young age of 20, leaving the cricketing world in shock and mourning. The talented cricketer was found dead in his apartment by a friend after he failed to answer his phone.
Despite his young age, Baker had already made a mark in the cricketing world, making two County appearances this season and showcasing his skills on the field. In his last match against Somerset, he took 3 wickets for 66 runs in the first innings, demonstrating his potential as a spinner.
Born in Redditch, Baker had come through the ranks at New Road and had even represented England at the U-19 level. He had signed a three-year contract with Worcestershire last year and played a crucial role in helping the team win promotion from Championship Division Two.
In a heartfelt tribute, Worcestershire described Baker as a “vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm” who was loved by everyone he met. The club’s chief executive, Ashley Giles, expressed his devastation at the news, emphasizing that Baker was not just a teammate but an integral part of their cricket family.
Baker’s talent was recognized by none other than England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who had a memorable encounter with him during a match in 2022. Stokes, who had hit Baker for 34 runs in an over, later reached out to him with words of encouragement and support, highlighting Baker’s potential and resilience.
The England Cricket Board (ECB) also expressed their sadness at Baker’s passing, sending their condolences to his family, friends, and everyone at Worcestershire CCC. The cricketing community has come together to mourn the loss of a promising young talent, whose potential was cut short far too soon.
