2028 Los Angeles Olympics Sports Program Decision Delayed by IOC
The anticipation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics just got a little more intense as the fate of cricket, breakdancing, and flag football hangs in the balance. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) unexpectedly delayed the process to add these sports to the Games, citing “ongoing discussions” with L.A. officials as the reason for the delay.
The IOC-appointed panel studying sports program changes has not yet had the opportunity to meet and make its final recommendation on which of the nine candidate sports will be added to the core events. The candidates include cricket, baseball-softball, flag football, lacrosse, breaking, karate, kickboxing, squash, and motorsports.
The decision on which sports will be added to the 2028 Olympics was supposed to be made on Friday by the IOC executive board. However, with the delay, the timeline for when a decision will be made is now uncertain.
One of the most highly anticipated additions to the Olympic program is cricket, especially in its T20 format. The possibility of an India-Pakistan cricket match at the Olympics has the potential to draw the largest global television audience of any event.
Breakdancing, officially known as breaking, is also expected to make its Olympic debut in 2028 after being included in the program for the 2024 Paris Games.
With the IOC pushing back the decision-making process, the sports world will have to wait a little longer to find out which sports will be added to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
