World Boxing in Talks with Prospective Member Nations for 2028 Los Angeles Games

World Boxing is making significant strides in its efforts to become the International Olympic Committee’s preferred partner for running boxing tournaments at the Los Angeles Games in 2028. The breakaway governing body has revealed that it is currently in talks with 25 to 30 prospective new member nations, showcasing a growing interest in joining their ranks.

After the expulsion of the International Boxing Association from the Olympic movement last year, World Boxing has emerged as a strong contender to take over the reins. The dispute with the IOC over finances, ties to Russia, and concerns about judging of bouts led to the decision to end IBA’s Olympic affiliation, paving the way for World Boxing to step in.

Secretary-general Simon Toulson expressed optimism about the increasing interest in joining World Boxing, with a “massive increase” in inquiries following the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to uphold the end of IBA’s Olympic affiliation. With 27 full members already on board, including powerhouse nations like the United States, England, Germany, and the Philippines, World Boxing is now looking to expand its reach to include more countries from Africa and Asia.

The IOC has made it clear that a new partner governing body for boxing needs to be in place early next year to ensure the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics. With talks progressing and interest growing, World Boxing is positioning itself as a strong candidate to fill that role and bring a fresh perspective to the boxing tournaments on the Olympic stage.
