Tim Tszyu in Discussions to Face Vergil Ortiz Jnr on Terence Crawford Undercard
In a blockbuster announcement, Australia’s rising boxing star Tim Tszyu is in talks to face Vergil Ortiz Jnr this August on the same card as the legendary Terence Crawford. ESPN was the first to report on Wednesday morning that negotiations are underway for a showdown between Tszyu and Ortiz Jr. in Los Angeles.
The highly anticipated fight is set to be part of the stacked Terence Crawford-Israil Madrimov undercard, which already includes the Issac Cruz-Jose Valenzuela junior welterweight title fight and the Andy Ruiz-Jarrell Miller heavyweight bout.
According to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, Tszyu-Ortiz is shaping up to be “one of the best action matchups in all of boxing, a 154-pound bout between two of the sport’s most entertaining fighters.” However, Ortiz must first emerge victorious and uninjured from this weekend’s fight against Thomas Dulorme for the Tszyu bout to take place.
The news comes hot on the heels of the WBO’s announcement that Crawford could be next in line for their super welterweight crown, potentially delaying Tszyu’s shot at a world title until 2025. The WBO has sanctioned Crawford’s planned August bout against WBA champ Madrimov as an interim title fight, with the winner set to face Sebastian Fundora.
If all goes according to plan, Tszyu’s highly anticipated rematch against Fundora would be put on hold, with the opportunity instead coming on the undercard of the Crawford headliner. This news comes as Tszyu’s undefeated younger brother Nikita gears up to defend his Australian super welterweight title against Danilo Creati at the Hordern Pavilion tonight.
With the boxing world buzzing over these developments, fans can expect an action-packed and star-studded event this August, headlined by two of the sport’s brightest talents in Tszyu and Ortiz Jr.
