From Delinquent to Champion: The Inspiring Journey of Jamaica’s Only Female Boxing Trainer, Jasmine Graham
Jasmine Graham: From Bullying Victim to Boxing Champion
Jasmine Graham’s journey from a troubled childhood to becoming the only registered woman boxing trainer in Jamaica is nothing short of inspiring. The 25-year-old, who grew up as a delinquent and a victim of bullying, has overcome her past to become the American Boxing Confederation’s women’s heavyweight champion of the Caribbean.
Graham’s tough upbringing fueled her passion for boxing, with her using the sport as a way to channel her aggression and stand up for herself. “When I step in the ring, I know that there is just one bull in this pen, and I have to be it,” she confidently stated.
Her introduction to boxing at 11 years old was a turning point in her life, as she was spotted by her principal defending her brother in a fight. This led to her training under coach Job Walters, a former boxer who had trained his son, former WBA world featherweight champion Nicholas ‘Axe Man’ Walters.
Through boxing, Graham found a sense of self-esteem and respect for herself and others. She credits the sport for transforming her behavior and helping her become a better person. “Boxing made me develop my self-esteem. I loved myself more, and I became more respectful to my elders,” she shared.
Now, Graham is focused on expanding boxing in the western region of Jamaica and inspiring others to overcome their own challenges through the sport. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. Jasmine Graham is not just a boxing champion, but a champion of resilience and strength.
