Former British and Commonwealth champion Willie Limond has tragically passed away at the age of 45, leaving behind a legacy of courage and determination in the boxing world. Limond, who had a professional record of 42-6 over two decades, fought some of the biggest names in the sport, including Amir Khan and Anthony Crolla.
The news of Limond’s death was confirmed by his son, Jake, on social media, revealing that the former champion had been battling illness after a suspected seizure while driving. Despite his health struggles, Limond fought on for nearly 10 days before passing away in the early hours of the morning.
Limond’s boxing career was marked by memorable moments, such as his victory over Curtis Woodhouse to claim the British super lightweight title in 2014 and his knockdown of a young Amir Khan in 2007. He also held the European title in 2004 and fought for the British title against Anthony Crolla in 2011.
In his final bout in September 2023, Limond faced Ricky Burns in Glasgow, suffering an eighth-round stoppage defeat. The St Andrew’s Sporting Club, where Limond trained, paid tribute to the late boxer, describing him as a legend of the sport and a beloved member of their community.
