Former boxing world champion Dingaan Thobela passes away at 57
The boxing world is mourning the loss of former world champion Dingaan Thobela, who passed away at the age of 57. Known as “The Rose of Soweto”, Thobela was found dead in his Johannesburg flat on Monday night after battling health issues for some time.
Trained by the legendary Norman Hlabane, Thobela had a successful amateur career before turning professional. In his 54-fight career, he became a world champion in two different weight divisions, showcasing his skill and determination in the ring.
Thobela captured the WBO lightweight title in 1990 by defeating Mauricio Acevez in the United States. He then went on to challenge Tony “The Tiger” Lopez for the WBA world title in 1993, winning the title in a highly contested match in Sacramento.
Despite facing setbacks in his career, Thobela continued to persevere and added the WBC super-middleweight world championship to his collection in 2000 with a knockout victory over Glen Catley.
Thobela leaves behind his estranged common-law wife Sandra and two children, Ntombi and Dingaan Thobela Junior. His legacy in the boxing world will always be remembered, as he was a true champion both inside and outside the ring.
