Ethiopia Hosts Professional Boxing Competition at Adwa Victory Memorial Museum

Ethiopia made history last weekend by hosting its first professional and semi-professional boxing competition at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum. The event, organized by the Ethiopian Boxing Federation and Solo International Sports PLC, was a significant step towards promoting the sport in the country.

The tournament, which was part of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s initiative to encourage second-generation Ethiopian Diaspora members to reconnect with their roots, saw some thrilling matches that kept the audience on the edge of their seats.

In the men’s 66kg semi-professional competition, Ethiopian Abraham Alem took on Kenyan Meshech Wofla, with Abraham emerging victorious in just 28 seconds. The women’s 66kg professional competition saw a fierce battle between Evelyn Ekenye of Kenya and Bethel Wolde of Ethiopia, with Bethel claiming victory in the 4th round.

The heavyweight bout between Ugandan Madelaine and Tanzanian Lucky Herre was another highlight of the event, with Madelaine securing a surprising third-round triumph.

Each winner of the competitions was awarded a prize of 100 thousand Birr, while the runner-ups received 50 thousand Birr. The event not only showcased the talent of young boxers but also promoted sports partnerships and cultural exchange between nations.

The success of the boxing competition is a testament to the growing popularity of the sport in Ethiopia and the efforts being made to revitalize the boxing scene in the country. With such events, Ethiopia is sure to make a mark on the international boxing stage in the years to come.
