Boxing Trainer Joe Gallagher Criticizes Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul Fight as Professional Bout
Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has come under fire for agreeing to a professional fight with ex-YouTube star Jake Paul in July. Boxing trainer Joe Gallagher has criticized the decision, stating that the bout should have been nothing more than an exhibition match.
Tyson, who will be 58 at the time of the fight, is over 30 years older than his opponent, raising concerns about his safety in the ring. The rules for the bout were only confirmed recently, with it being granted professional status. This means that the fight will go down on both fighters’ career records, marking Tyson’s return to professional boxing for the first time since 2005.
Gallagher expressed his disbelief at the decision to make the fight a professional one, especially on Tyson’s part. He believes that the fight belongs on a “Misfits card” and predicts that it will be a “hard watch” for fans.
The trainer also highlighted the different conditions of the fight, such as eight two-minute rounds and the use of 14oz gloves instead of the usual 10oz. He questioned the Texas Commission for allowing the fight to happen in this manner, stating that it doesn’t fit into the traditional boxing world.
Gallagher emphasized that the fight wouldn’t have been sanctioned under British boxing control and suggested that money played a significant role in the decision-making process. Despite the criticism, the fight is set to take place on July 20, with fans eagerly anticipating the showdown between the two fighters with such a significant age gap.
