Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson reveals why son Dalvin Azumah Nelson Junior quit boxing: “It’s not for pampered children”
Legendary Ghanaian boxer Azumah Nelson has opened up about why his son, Dalvin Azumah Nelson Junior, decided to step away from pursuing a boxing career. The former WBC featherweight champion revealed that his son started boxing while still in school, but found it challenging to balance both his education and his boxing training.
“I introduced him to boxing at a young age, and he grew up with it, but he later realized he couldn’t do it again. It’s a difficult sport that requires dedication and determination. You wake up at 4 am to go jogging and then hit the gym a few hours later,” Azumah Nelson shared.
Dalvin Azumah Nelson Junior began his amateur boxing career in 2017 under the guidance of trainer Lartekwei Lartey. However, the demands of the sport proved to be too much for him, especially as he progressed in his education.
Aside from the challenge of balancing school and boxing, Azumah Nelson also mentioned that his son came to the realization that boxing is a sport for those who come from humble beginnings and are willing to hustle for success.
Despite his son’s decision to step away from the sport, Azumah Nelson expressed that he was not worried about it, as he understood the physical toll that boxing can take on an individual.
Azumah Nelson, who had a successful boxing career with 39 wins out of 47 fights, was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York. In addition to sharing insights into his son’s boxing journey, the boxing legend also reflected on his close relationship with former President Jerry John Rawlings, attributing it to the former president’s humble gestures, such as sweeping his training room.
