Amy Broadhurst switches allegiance to represent GB Boxing in Olympic qualifying event
In a surprising turn of events, former world boxing champion Amy Broadhurst has made the decision to switch allegiance from Ireland to Great Britain for the upcoming Olympic qualifying event in Thailand. The 27-year-old, who holds dual citizenship, was left out of the Ireland squad despite her impressive track record, prompting her to pursue her Olympic dream through a different route.
Broadhurst, who is affectionately known as ‘Baby Canelo,’ has had a stellar career, clinching world gold in the light-welterweight division in 2022 and also securing European and Commonwealth Games titles in the same year. However, after being informed by the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) that she would not be considered for the final qualifier, Broadhurst felt compelled to explore other options.
Expressing her gratitude towards GB Boxing for the opportunity, Broadhurst stated, “It has always been my dream to compete at the Olympic Games and I am very happy that I have been selected to go to the final qualifying event in Thailand in May.” Despite facing setbacks in the past, including missing out on qualifying for Paris last year and sustaining a shoulder injury, Broadhurst remains determined to achieve her goal of competing on the biggest stage in sports.
With the 2024 Paris Olympics fast approaching, Broadhurst is focused on giving her best at the qualifier and securing a spot at the prestigious event. Her decision to represent Great Britain has been met with support from her new teammates and coaches, who have welcomed her with open arms.
As the boxing world eagerly anticipates the upcoming Olympic Games, all eyes will be on Broadhurst as she embarks on this new chapter in her career. Stay tuned for more updates on her journey towards Paris and her quest for Olympic glory.
