UConn Women’s Basketball Adds Ivy League Player of the Year Kaitlyn Chen from Transfer Portal
The UConn women’s basketball team has made a major addition to their roster, securing the commitment of Ivy League Player of the Year, Kaitlyn Chen, from the transfer portal. The 5-foot-9 senior, who previously played at Princeton under former UConn forward Carla Berube, announced her decision to join the Huskies on social media.
Chen, known for her scoring prowess, was Princeton’s leading scorer for the past two seasons and claimed Ivy League Player of the Year honors last season. Averaging 15.8 points, 4.9 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, she has proven herself as a standout player both in regular season play and in the postseason.
In postseason play, Chen has been exceptional, averaging 20.3 points in eight games and earning Ivy League tournament Most Outstanding Player honors in consecutive seasons. Her performance has been crucial in helping Princeton secure NCAA tournament berths during each of her three seasons with the team.
With Chen expected to step into the starting point guard role for UConn, alongside star players like Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, and KK Arnold, the Huskies are poised to make a strong push for another Women’s Final Four appearance and national championship. The addition of the nation’s No. 1 recruit, Sarah Strong, further bolsters their lineup following a successful season that ended in a Final Four loss to Iowa.
Chen’s decision to transfer as a graduate student, taking advantage of the NCAA’s COVID-19 waiver for an additional year of eligibility, ensures that fans will have the opportunity to witness her talents on the court for one more season. Her arrival at UConn adds depth and skill to an already formidable roster, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
