Detroit Pistons to Hire New President of Basketball Operations Following Disappointing Season

The Detroit Pistons are gearing up for a major shakeup after a dismal season that saw them finish with a franchise-worst record of 14-68. Team owner Tom Gores is reportedly looking to make changes at the top, but surprisingly, both general manager Troy Weaver and coach Monty Williams are set to stay on for the upcoming season.

However, Gores is not stopping there. The Pistons have decided to bring in a new head of basketball operations (President) to work alongside Weaver in the front office. The search for this new executive is set to begin this week, according to sources.

Gores had hinted at the possibility of changes back in December, during a rough stretch for the team that included a 25-game losing streak. He emphasized the need for accountability and stated that “change is coming.”

Prospective candidates for the team president position include familiar faces like Jon Horst, the current general manager of the Milwaukee Bucks, who previously worked in the Pistons organization. Other possibilities include John Hammond, Neil Olshey, and former Pistons coach Dwane Casey.

Weaver, who was hired in 2020, had been tasked with clearing out cumbersome contracts to free up salary cap space, and he has succeeded in that regard. The Pistons now have a projected $61 million in cap space heading into the offseason.

Despite the disappointment of the past season, there is a sense of optimism surrounding the Pistons as they look to turn things around under new leadership. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how these changes will impact the team’s future.
