Michigan State Women’s Basketball Adds Former Ohio State Guard Emma Shumate from Transfer Portal

Michigan State women’s basketball has made another big addition to their roster, as former Ohio State guard Emma Shumate has announced her commitment to the Spartans. Shumate, who entered the transfer portal last month, brings a sharpshooting presence to the team after a successful stint with the Buckeyes.

The 6-1 guard from Dresden, Ohio, had a solid redshirt sophomore season at Ohio State, averaging 4.0 points per game while shooting nearly 42% from beyond the arc. Shumate played a key role in helping the Buckeyes to a 26-6 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to Duke in the second round.

Prior to her time at Ohio State, Shumate redshirted her freshman season at West Virginia before transferring to the Buckeyes. As a high school standout at Newark High School in Ohio, Shumate was a four-star recruit and led her team to the state finals in 2021.

In a letter to Buckeye Nation upon entering the transfer portal, Shumate expressed her gratitude for the support she received during her time at Ohio State. She thanked the fans for making her experience special and noted that she was taking valuable memories and friendships with her as she moved on to the next chapter of her basketball career.

With Shumate’s addition, Michigan State gains a talented shooter to help fill the void left by the departure of their top two 3-point shooters. Spartan fans can look forward to seeing Shumate in action as she joins a team looking to make a splash in the upcoming season.
