Celebrating A-K Valley Sports Hall of Fame Teams: 1946 New Kensington Red Raiders and 1979 Valley Vikings

The Alle-Kiski Valley Sports Hall of Fame is set to make history by inducting its first-ever teams: the 1946 WPIAL champion New Kensington Red Raiders football squad and the 1979 Valley Vikings state championship boys basketball team. These two legendary teams will be honored alongside eight individuals during the 53rd induction ceremony on May 4 at the Pittsburgh Shriners Center in Harmar.

The 1946 New Kensington Red Raiders, led by the iconic Willie Thrower, are hailed as one of the greatest high school football teams in A-K Valley history. After losing the WPIAL title game in 1945, the Red Raiders bounced back in 1946 to claim the championship with an undefeated 8-0 record. The team’s unity and camaraderie were put to the test when they stood together against discrimination, showcasing their bond both on and off the field.

On the basketball court, the 1979 Valley Vikings, featuring standout players like Bill Varner, Chipper Harris, Ron McNabb, and Goose Pryor, overcame adversity to capture the state championship. After a disappointing loss in the WPIAL playoffs, the Vikings rallied together and went on a remarkable run in the PIAA playoffs, culminating in a thrilling victory over Allentown Allen at Pittsburgh Civic Arena.
