BYU’s Kevin Young Aims to Turn Program into NBA Pipeline

Kevin Young has big plans for BYU basketball as he takes over as the new head coach of the Cougars. With a background in the NBA as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Phoenix Suns, Young is looking to turn BYU into a pipeline for NBA talent while also building a consistently successful program in the Big 12.

Young’s arrival at BYU comes at a crucial time, as the team has already seen three key players enter the transfer portal following the departure of former coach Mark Pope. However, Young is confident in the hunger and potential of the current roster, stating that the players are eager to improve and are looking for guidance on how to do so.

Despite not having any previous ties to BYU, Young was the top target for the Cougars after Pope’s exit. Athletic director Tom Holmoe expressed his admiration for Young’s accomplishments in the NBA and emphasized that the decision to hire him was well thought out.

While Young will continue to coach with the Suns during the NBA Playoffs, he is already making plans for his full-time role at BYU. His immediate priorities include retaining current players, reaching out to recruits, and assembling a coaching staff. He also plans to implement a fast-paced offense to build on the team’s success in the Big 12.

This opportunity at BYU marks Young’s first head coaching job at the NCAA Division I level, but he brings a wealth of experience from his time in the NBA G-League. With a clear vision and a proven track record of success, Young is ready to lead BYU to new heights in college basketball.
