Topeka West High School Names Christian Ulsaker as New Head Boys’ Basketball Coach
Topeka West High School has found its new head boys’ basketball coach to succeed the legendary Rick Bloomquist, and his name is Christian Ulsaker. Ulsaker, who will officially take over the program in the 2024-25 season, brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Chargers.
Having spent five seasons leading Wabaunsee, Ulsaker is no stranger to the basketball scene in Kansas. Prior to his time in Alma, he has made coaching stops at Washburn Rural, Hayden, Shawnee Heights, and more. However, Ulsaker expressed his desire to return to Topeka, calling it home and stating that he had always hoped for a coaching opportunity at Topeka West.
With a background in special education, Ulsaker emphasized the importance of building relationships with his players and their families. He wants his players to know that they can come to him for anything, not just basketball-related issues. His understanding and competitive nature make him a well-rounded coach who values the well-being of his players on and off the court.
As a former Mr. Kansas Basketball and Washburn University player, Ulsaker has a deep connection to the state and its basketball culture. He credits Washburn for not only shaping his basketball career but also for introducing him to his wife and creating lasting memories.
Taking over from the legendary Rick Bloomquist, Ulsaker acknowledges the challenge ahead but is grateful for the opportunity to learn from a basketball icon. He values the relationship he has built with Bloomquist over the years and appreciates the wisdom and guidance he has received.
As Ulsaker prepares to lead the Topeka West Chargers into a new era, the community eagerly anticipates the impact he will have on the program and the players. With his experience, passion, and dedication to the game, Ulsaker is poised to continue the legacy of excellence set by his predecessor.
