London Lions Make History with EuroCup Victory – A Night to Remember for British Basketball
In a historic night for British basketball, the London Lions women’s team made history by becoming the first British basketball team – male or female – to win a European title. The Lions staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Besiktas and lift the EuroCup in front of a sell-out crowd at London’s Copper Box arena.
After losing the first leg 75-68 to Besiktas in Istanbul, the Lions needed to win by at least eight points to clinch the title. In a tense battle that went down to the wire, guard Holly Winterburn hit a crucial three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Head coach Stella Kaltsidou expressed her pride in the team’s achievement, stating, “We’ve put British basketball at the top of Europe. I hope this result inspires more boys and girls to play the sport.”
American-British guard Karlie Samuelson was named MVP in the final, scoring 19 points to help her team secure the historic win. Despite the triumph, the victory may be bittersweet as the team’s owners have reportedly indicated they may not be able to defend their European title next season due to funding issues.
Winterburn, who is leaving the franchise to play in the WNBA next season, reflected on the team’s bond and the difficult decision to move on. She thanked London for their support of British basketball but acknowledged that it was time to turn the page to the next chapter.
The Lions’ victory marks a significant moment in British basketball history and serves as a reminder of the talent and potential within the sport in the UK.
