NKU Women’s Basketball Coach Steps Down, Impact on Local Players and All “A” Classic Baseball Final
The recent news of Camryn Whitaker-Volz stepping down as head coach of the Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team has had an impact on current and former high school players from the area.
Scott graduate Mya Meredith and Notre Dame graduate Noelle Hubert were both first-year players on the Norse roster last season. Hubert, a freshman guard, played in 31 games during the team’s 11-21 campaign, while Meredith, a junior transfer, did not see any playing time.
Conner senior Anna Hamilton, who committed to NKU last October, is also affected by this coaching change. Hamilton, a standout guard, averaged 16.6 points and 4.4 rebounds in her final high school season and was recognized as one of the top players in the 9th Region by local coaches.
While Hubert and Meredith have not commented on their plans for the future, Hamilton, currently on a spring break vacation, is reportedly disappointed by Whitaker-Volz’s departure but intends to stay with the program, according to Conner coach Michelle Gambrel.
Whitaker-Volz agreed to step down following a university investigation into allegations of mistreatment of players. Although it was determined that she did not violate any employment policies, it was mutually agreed upon that a change in leadership was necessary for the women’s basketball program.
In other sports news, Beechwood and Newport Central Catholic have advanced to the championship game of the 9th Region All “A” Classic baseball tournament. Beechwood defeated Holy Cross 14-3 in the semifinals, while NewCath edged past St. Henry 3-2. The winner of the region final will move on to the sectional round of the All “A” Classic playoffs.
Additionally, Holy Cross graduate Jacob Meyer has announced his transfer to DePaul University’s basketball team after a successful freshman season at Coastal Carolina. Meyer, a standout guard, led his high school team in scoring and looks to make an impact in the Big East Conference under new head coach Chris Holtman.
